Jonathan Has Promised Active Role In PDP— Turaki

Kabiru Turaki, chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has said former President Goodluck Jonathan has assured the party of his continued and more active involvement in its affairs.

Gatekeepers News reports that Turaki spoke on Tuesday after a closed-door meeting between the PDP leadership and Jonathan in Abuja.

He said the delegation briefed the former president on the condition of the party, ongoing challenges, and plans, while also seeking his guidance and support.

According to Turaki, Jonathan reaffirmed that he remains a card-carrying member of the PDP and is committed to contributing more actively to the party’s activities.

He added that the former president expressed a sense of obligation to the party, noting that the PDP had stood by him throughout his political career.

Turaki said Jonathan’s words were encouraging, especially as the party prepares for off-season elections in Ekiti and Osun states and begins early planning ahead of the 2027 general election.

The PDP chairman was accompanied to the meeting by former governors, members of the board of trustees, founding members, and some state party leaders.

In recent months, some PDP members have called on Jonathan to consider contesting the 2027 presidential election following the party’s decision to zone its presidential ticket to the south, although the former president has not made any public declaration on the matter.

PDP has faced internal divisions since the 2023 general election. In November, a faction supported by PDP Governors, including Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi and Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo, held a convention that produced a new national working committee led by Turaki.

That convention also led to the expulsion of Nyesom Wike, minister of Federal Capital Territory, and several of his allies. The Wike-led group rejected the decision, set up parallel party structures, and announced counter-expulsions, deepening the crisis within the opposition party.
