Two additional members of Rivers State House of Assembly have distanced themselves from the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.
Gatekeepers News reports that they urged their colleagues to halt the move and seek a political resolution. The lawmakers, Barile Nwakoh and Emilia Amadi, made their position known on Wednesday during a press briefing in Port Harcourt.
They appealed to the Assembly to suspend further action, stressing the need for dialogue and stability in the state. Their stance follows a similar call earlier in the week by other lawmakers who asked the House to reconsider the impeachment process and explore peaceful alternatives, despite alleged constitutional violations by the Governor and his deputy.
The Rivers Assembly had last week initiated impeachment proceedings after gross misconduct allegations against Governor Fubara were read on the floor of the House and reportedly backed by a majority of lawmakers.
The development has intensified political tension in the state, deepening the long-running conflict between the executive and the legislature.
The crisis is widely linked to internal political divisions within the state, particularly the rift between Governor Fubara and allies of former Governor Nyesom Wike.
