Abba Yusuf Meets Tinubu Amid Speculation Over APC Defection

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State on Monday met with President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja, amid ongoing speculation over his possible defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Gatekeepers Newreports that Yusuf, dressed in his signature white flowing attire and red Kwankwasiyya cap, was sighted heading into the president’s office at about 4:13 pm.

The meeting marks Yusuf’s first known engagement with President Tinubu since the president returned from the 2026 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.

The visit comes against the backdrop of reports suggesting that the Kano governor is considering a move from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ruling APC, following weeks of behind-the-scenes negotiations.

Sources familiar with the discussions said the talks have stalled over the APC leadership’s refusal to provide Yusuf with a written guarantee of an automatic governorship ticket for the 2027 elections.

Meanwhile, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former Kano governor and Yusuf’s political mentor, has openly criticised the governor’s potential defection, describing it as a betrayal.

Kwankwaso has also warned that Yusuf could face political consequences in the 2027 polls should he eventually join the APC.
