Niger Varsity Student Reportedly Dies By Suicide After Losing ₦600k To Betting

A 300-level Computer Science student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL), Niger State, has reportedly died by suicide following the loss of ₦600,000 to betting.

Gatekeepers Newreports he Niger State Police Command confirmed the death of the student, identified as Kelvin Danlami.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that the money was entrusted to Danlami for house rent but was allegedly spent on gambling.

In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, said the student was found in his room in the early hours of Monday.

“On 19/1/26 at about 10.30 am, information received indicated that in the early hours of the day, one Kelvin Danlami, a student of IBBUL, was found to have hanged himself in his room with a cloth tied to the ceiling fan,” the statement read.

Abiodun said one of the student’s neighbours raised the alarm after discovering the incident, adding that the victim was rushed to the General Hospital, Lapai, where he was confirmed dead.

“The police operatives attached to Lapai Division visited the scene, conducted a preliminary investigation and the family of the deceased was contacted,” he said.

He added that investigations had commenced to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.

“However, further investigation is ongoing to ascertain the reason for such action,” Abiodun stated.
