Makinde Meets Tinubu At State House

Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo State, on Thursday met with President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja.

Gatekeepers Newreports that Makinde arrived at the Presidential Villa shortly after Caleb Mutfwang, governor of Plateau State. It was gathered that the president held separate meetings with both governors.

TheCable reports that the closed-door meeting comes amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Makinde, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had recently said he would not support Tinubu’s re-election, citing concerns about the survival of democracy in Nigeria.

He also spoke publicly about his strained relationship with Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), alleging that the former Rivers governor had vowed to “hold PDP” for Tinubu ahead of the 2027 polls without consulting party stakeholders.

In the build-up to the 2023 presidential election, Makinde was one of the G5 governors of the PDP who refused to support Atiku Abubakar, the party’s presidential candidate.

The group, led by Wike, argued that the party’s presidential candidate and national chairman should not come from the same region.

Despite Oyo being controlled by the PDP, Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, won the presidential election in the state.

The relationship between Makinde and Wike later deteriorated, with both men locked in a struggle for control of PDP party structures.
