President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured Nigerians that those responsible for the recent deadly attacks in Kwara State will be tracked down and punished, insisting that the perpetrators will not escape justice.
Gatekeepers News reports that the President gave the assurance on Thursday at the State House in Abuja during a meeting with Kwara State Governor, Abdulrahman Abdulrazak, who briefed him on the violent assault on communities in Kaiama Local Government Area.
The attack, which occurred on Wednesday, left at least 75 residents dead, while many houses were destroyed by fire after armed terrorists invaded Nuku and Woro communities.
According to the Governor, the assault was carried out by suspected Islamic extremists who attempted to force residents to adopt radical beliefs. Many villagers were reportedly killed after resisting the move, while others fled to nearby communities for safety.
Following the briefing, Tinubu ordered the immediate deployment of a battalion of Nigerian Army troops to the affected area to restore calm, secure lives and property, and pursue the attackers. Security agencies were also directed to intensify intelligence gathering and patrol operations to prevent further violence.
Reacting to the incident, the President described the killings as deeply troubling, especially as the victims were targeted for refusing to submit to forced indoctrination. He condemned the attackers, describing them as heartless for attacking defenceless civilians in their bid to spread terror.
“It is commendable that the community members, even though Muslims, refused to be conscripted into a weird belief that promoted violence over peace and dialogue. Nigeria will never surrender its people to extremism and terrorism masquerading as faith,” the president said.
“I have further directed close collaboration between federal and state agencies to provide immediate support and relief to the affected community and to ensure that those responsible for this atrocity are pursued and brought to justice, just like other terrorists before them. They will not go scot-free.
“I pray for the repose of the souls of the departed and extend my deepest condolences to the families who have lost loved ones. I also sympathise with the people and government of Kwara State.
“The federal government stands with you. We will protect our communities, defend our values, and defeat those who seek to divide us through terror.”
The latest attack adds to the growing wave of violent incidents in parts of northern Nigeria, where communities have continued to suffer deadly assaults linked to terrorism, banditry, and religious extremism.
