Tinubu To Commission First Section Of Lagos–Calabar Highway By May

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to inaugurate the first section of Lagos–Calabar coastal highway by May, as construction work continues to progress steadily on the landmark infrastructure project.

Gatekeepers News reports that the Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed this while providing an update on the project’s development, noting that Section One, which stretches from Ahmadu Bello Way in Lagos to Eleko in Ibeju-Lekki, is advancing at a rapid pace.

The minister said the federal government is committed to meeting the timeline to ensure that Nigerians begin to benefit from the road as soon as possible.

Umahi explained that the Lagos–Calabar highway, which spans about 700 kilometres across several coastal states, is designed to boost economic growth, enhance connectivity, and reduce travel time along Nigeria’s southern corridor. He added that the project will also support tourism, trade, and industrial development, while creating thousands of direct and indirect jobs.

According to him, the construction is being handled using concrete pavement technology to ensure durability and long-term value, especially considering the coastal terrain and heavy traffic expected on the route. He assured that quality and safety standards are being strictly followed to deliver a world-class road network.

The minister further stated that the federal government remains determined to complete the entire highway in phases, stressing that the project aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises infrastructure development as a key driver of national growth.

The Lagos–Calabar highway is expected to connect major commercial hubs, open up coastal communities, and significantly improve transportation efficiency across the southern region once fully completed.
