Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu will receive students from six Lagos schools at the State House following their medal-winning outing at the 2026 World School Games Olympia held in Doha, Qatar, from January 29 to 31.

Gatekeepers News reports that the Lagos State Government said the young athletes competed in athletics, football, and swimming across the U-11, U-13, and U-15 categories, securing top finishes and bringing recognition to the state on the global stage.

The participating schools were Saint Saviour’s School, Grange School, Riverbank School, British International School, Lagos Preparatory & Secondary School, and Corona School. According to the statement, the students displayed strong technical ability and confidence throughout the tournament.

Saint Saviour’s School finished as overall winner in the U-11 division after dominating several events. Grange School placed second overall in the U-13 category and third overall in the U-15 category, showing consistency across age levels.

The government said the reception by Governor Sanwo-Olu will focus not only on the medals but also on the discipline, teamwork, and resilience shown by the students during the international competition.

The statement added that the Governor will also recognise Team Lagos athletes who represented Nigeria at the African Youth Games in Angola. Many of the athletes were first identified at the National Youth Games, where they competed for Lagos before earning national selection.

At the African Youth Games held in Angola from December 10 to 20, 2025, Team Lagos athletes, including students from Greensprings School and other leading institutions, contributed to Nigeria’s medal tally in various sporting events. Officials said their performance confirmed that Lagos continues to produce athletes capable of competing at continental and global levels.

Governor Sanwo-Olu described the achievement as a proud moment for the state, saying it reflects the renewed focus on school sports development and the commitment of parents, coaches, and administrators.

Lekan Fatodu, Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, said the performance marks a turning point for youth sports in the state. He stated that the success shows what can happen when young talent is supported with proper structure and opportunity.

The government said the planned ceremony will celebrate the students and also encourage other young people in Lagos to combine academic excellence with sporting ambition.
