The Edo State House of Assembly has summoned the management of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) to appear before lawmakers on March 9, 2026, over persistent power outages across the state.

Gatekeepers Newreports that the directive was issued on Wednesday by the speaker of the house, Blessing Agbebaku, during plenary.

Agbebaku expressed concern over the worsening electricity situation in the state, describing it as unacceptable amid the hardship faced by residents and businesses.

He noted that several lawmakers had facilitated the installation of transformers in their constituencies in an effort to improve electricity supply to communities.

However, reports indicate that the distribution company allegedly requires payment before energising some of the newly installed transformers, a situation lawmakers say has further complicated electricity access for residents.

The assembly said it would seek clarification from the management of Benin Electricity Distribution Company on the current power supply challenges and the conditions attached to energising transformers provided by communities.

Lawmakers also signalled their readiness to explore legislative and oversight measures aimed at improving electricity service delivery in the state.

The Edo State House of Assembly later adjourned plenary to Monday, March 9, 2026, when the company’s management is expected to appear before the house.
