IWD: Remi Tinubu Urges Greater Support For Women’s Empowerment

Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has called for stronger commitment to advancing the rights and opportunities of women, saying empowering women is vital to building a stronger and more inclusive Nigeria.

Gatekeepers News reports that in a message marking the 2026 International Women’s Day, the First Lady joined Nigerians and the global community in celebrating the achievements, resilience and contributions of women across the country and around the world.

She said the annual commemoration offers an important moment to recognise the crucial roles women play in families, communities and national development, while also reflecting on the need to intensify efforts toward gender equality.

According to her, the 2026 theme, “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls,” highlights the urgency of taking concrete steps to ensure that women and girls enjoy equal opportunities, protection and justice in society.

Senator Tinubu emphasised that empowering women should not be treated as charity but as a deliberate investment in the nation’s future.

“When women are given access to education, quality healthcare, economic opportunities, leadership platforms, justice and equity, the entire society benefits,” she said.

She noted that the empowerment of women strengthens families, drives economic growth and helps create more stable and prosperous communities.

The First Lady also reaffirmed the commitment of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to policies and initiatives aimed at improving the welfare, dignity and advancement of Nigerian women and girls.

She urged stakeholders across government, the private sector, civil society organisations and development partners to continue working together to remove barriers that limit women’s full participation in national life.

Remi further encouraged Nigerian women and girls to remain steadfast and confident in pursuing their aspirations and contributing meaningfully to the nation’s development.

“When women rise, Nigeria rises,” she declared.

The First Lady also wished Nigerian women and girls a memorable International Women’s Day celebration and renewed commitment to building a society where every woman and girl can thrive.
