The United States has issued a fresh security alert warning of potential terrorist threats targeting American facilities and U.S.-affiliated schools in Nigeria.

Gatekeepers Newreports that in the advisory released on Tuesday, the United States Embassy in Nigeria urged American citizens and travellers to exercise heightened caution when visiting U.S. government facilities and related institutions across the country.

The alert comes one week after the U.S. Embassy in Abuja warned its citizens about possible protests in Abuja linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran.

According to the latest advisory, the potential threats may target the embassy, the U.S. Consulate General in Lagos, and schools affiliated with the United States.

The embassy advised travellers to take additional precautions, including varying the times and routes used when visiting American facilities.

It also urged individuals to remain vigilant and avoid predictable routines.

“Travellers should increase awareness of their surroundings, avoid predictable routines, and review general security precautions with family to reduce their risk,” the advisory stated.

Other recommended safety measures include keeping a low profile, ensuring mobile phones are fully charged in case of emergencies, staying alert in public spaces, avoiding crowds and demonstrations, and familiarising oneself with emergency exits when entering buildings.

Last week, the embassy cancelled all visa appointments scheduled for Wednesday due to the high likelihood of protests in Abuja linked to the conflict involving Iran.

It noted that previous demonstrations by some groups over the ongoing conflict had led to violent clashes between protesters and Nigerian security forces.
