Veteran Nigerian gospel singer and evangelist Toun Soetan has passed away at the age of 73.
Gatekeepers News reports that the death was confirmed on Friday by gospel comedian Ayo Ajewole, popularly known as Woli Agba, in a tribute shared on Instagram.
In the message, he praised her lifelong devotion to Christian ministry, writing that she had “transitioned into glory to meet the Lord Jesus” and praying for comfort for her family.
Another gospel musician, Peter Olaniyi, also confirmed the development, describing the late singer as a legend whose music ministry influenced many believers across Nigeria.
Born Racheal Olatoun Soetan in Lagos, she grew up in Ibadan and originally came from a Muslim family before converting to Christianity in 1974 after attending a revival service at Oritamefa Baptist Church. Following her conversion, she became deeply involved in church activities and served in the choir for several years.
Before committing fully to ministry, Soetan worked as a teacher for about 16 years. She later devoted her life to evangelism and gospel music, eventually founding Trinity World Evangelical Ministry where she trained and mentored younger gospel ministers.
During a career that spanned more than four decades, she became widely recognised as one of the pioneers of Yoruba gospel music. She was especially known for composing the popular Christian chorus “Darling Jesus,” along with other songs such as “Ke Pe Jesu,” “Cast Your Burdens,” and “Train Up Your Child,” which remain widely sung in churches.
Her death has triggered tributes from gospel artistes and admirers who described her as a mentor and spiritual inspiration whose songs and teachings impacted generations of worshippers.
She is survived by her husband, Titus Soetan, family members, and a large community of gospel ministers influenced by her ministry.
