Police Launch Investigation Into Viral Assault At Igbinedion School

Edo State Police Command has begun an investigation into a viral assault involving students of Igbinedion Education Centre in Benin City.

Gatekeepers News reports that the incident came to public attention after a video circulating on social media showed two students physically attacking another student believed to be in a junior class. In the footage, the victim was repeatedly beaten, kicked and dragged on the ground while crying out in pain.

Police spokesperson Eno Ikoedem confirmed that the command is aware of the incident and has initiated a probe into the matter. She said the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, directed the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area to immediately visit the school and conduct a detailed investigation.

According to the police, the investigation will proceed regardless of the disciplinary actions already taken by the school authorities. The command assured the public that those responsible for the assault would face legal consequences in line with their ages and the provisions of the law.

Meanwhile, the management of the school confirmed that the students involved in the incident had been expelled following an internal investigation. The school described the behaviour seen in the video as disturbing and said it violates its zero-tolerance policy on bullying, intimidation and violence.

The police inquiry will determine the full circumstances surrounding the assault while ensuring that appropriate action is taken against those involved.
