Federal Government has begun moves to strengthen Nigeria’s emergency medical response system with plans to procure new emergency care helicopters.

Gatekeepers News reports that Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, confirmed that discussions are underway with Airbus on the development of an Integrated National Ground-To-Air Health Emergency Management System.

The initiative, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is aimed at improving rapid medical response and strengthening emergency healthcare delivery across the country.

During a visit to France, the minister held talks with Airbus executives and also inspected an emergency care helicopter at a French government-supported air ambulance facility in Lyon.

Pate said the engagement forms part of efforts to modernise Nigeria’s emergency medical infrastructure, noting that the proposed system will integrate air and ground response capabilities to handle critical health emergencies more effectively.

The planned acquisition of air ambulances is expected to significantly enhance the country’s capacity to respond to accidents, disasters, and other urgent medical situations.
