Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has called on Nigerians to remain steadfast in their support for democratic governance, urging citizens to work together to strengthen the country’s institutions and democratic values.
Gatekeepers News reports that in a statement marking this year’s Democracy Day celebration, Fintiri described June 12 as a landmark date in Nigeria’s political history, symbolising the resilience, sacrifices and triumph of the people’s will in the nation’s democratic journey.
The governor paid tribute to democracy advocates, both living and deceased, whose struggles and sacrifices helped entrench the democratic system currently enjoyed across the country.
He noted that June 12 serves as a reminder that sovereignty ultimately belongs to the people and underscores the importance of protecting democratic ideals.
Fintiri also highlighted achievements recorded by his administration over the past seven years, particularly in infrastructure development aimed at improving economic growth and enhancing the welfare of residents of Adamawa State.
According to him, the progress made by his government demonstrates that democracy can deliver meaningful benefits to citizens when properly implemented.
“As we mark this year’s Democracy Day, I call for the continued support, patience, and cooperation of all citizens of Adamawa State and Nigeria at large. With your support, we can consolidate on our gains and provide even more dividends of democracy that will uplift our communities, strengthen our economy, and secure a better future for our children,” he said.
The governor urged Nigerians to remain united and committed to sustaining democratic governance and strengthening national institutions, expressing confidence that the country’s current challenges can be overcome through collective effort and determination.
“The challenges of today cannot and will not overwhelm our great country. We are a people defined by resilience, courage, and hope. If we stand united, Nigeria will emerge stronger,” Fintiri stated.
He stressed the importance of peace, tolerance, patriotism and active citizen participation in nation-building, noting that democracy requires continuous commitment from both leaders and the governed.
“Democracy is not an event but a process. Let us all play our part to deepen it, protect it, and ensure that it delivers prosperity, justice, and dignity for every Nigerian,” he added.
