Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has called on the National Assembly to summon the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF) to explain conflicting accounts regarding the bank accounts linked to Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC).
Gatekeepers News reports that the politician said the contradictory positions have raised serious questions about transparency and accountability within the Tinubu administration.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by his media aide, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said the CBN’s testimony before the House of Representatives contradicted the Office of the Accountant-General’s earlier claim that the PFIPC did not have an operational account with the apex bank. He argued that both institutions could not be correct at the same time and described the situation as a growing credibility crisis for the federal government.
The former presidential candidate urged lawmakers to invite both the CBN Governor and the Accountant-General to appear jointly before the investigative committee under oath to provide Nigerians with a clear account of how the PFIPC accounts were opened.
He also called on President Bola Tinubu to order an independent investigation into the controversy and publicly state which version of events his administration accepts.
The controversy stems from the CBN’s disclosure to the House of Representatives that it opened two domiciliary accounts—one in US dollars and another in British pounds—for the PFIPC on the directive of the Accountant-General’s office.
However, the apex bank maintained that the accounts were never funded or operated. The Accountant-General’s office had previously insisted the account-opening process was never completed because the required documentation was not submitted.
