FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has suspended a director of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) over allegations of granting illegal building approvals for structures erected on waterways in Abuja.
Gatekeepers News reports that Wike disclosed this during a media briefing, where he said the director was suspended in line with civil service rules after investigations into approvals issued for developments on waterways.
The minister has been overseeing the demolition of structures obstructing waterways and drainage channels in parts of Abuja following recent flooding in the nation’s capital.
Wike had earlier ordered the immediate demolition of buildings constructed on designated waterways in Maitama and other flood-prone areas, insisting that the enforcement would continue regardless of the status of property owners.
He said the flooding was worsened by human activities, including the construction of buildings on waterways, blockage of drainage channels and indiscriminate dumping of refuse.
The minister also said the administration would not allow green areas, parks and recreational spaces to be converted for unauthorised purposes, adding that officials responsible for approving such developments would be held accountable.
Wike maintained that the FCT Administration would continue enforcing the Abuja master plan and take action against officials and property owners who violate development regulations.
