The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has extended the deadline for the mandatory online verification and enrolment exercise for eligible federal civil servants to December 31, 2026.
Gatekeepers News reports that the exercise, which began in February, was initially scheduled to end on July 31. It covers employees of treasury-funded ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) who are entitled to accrued pension rights under the former Defined Benefit Scheme.
PenCom said the extension followed requests from several MDAs for additional time to enable eligible employees to participate in and complete the online enrolment process.
As of July, MDAs had uploaded 62,320 records of active employees and retirees, while only 31,099 employees had successfully completed the enrolment. The commission estimates that about 150,000 active federal government employees are entitled to accrued pension rights.
The accrued rights relate to pension and gratuity benefits earned by employees before the transition from the Defined Benefit Scheme to the Contributory Pension Scheme in 2004.
PenCom urged eligible employees and treasury-funded MDAs that have not completed the process to take advantage of the extension and conclude their enrolment before the new deadline.
