Manchester United avoided a third consecutive defeat after Matheus Cunha scored an 89th-minute equaliser to secure a 1-1 draw against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday.
Gatekeepers News reports that Fulham took the lead shortly after the hour mark when Calvin Bassey’s effort deflected off United defender Lisandro Martinez and into the net. The hosts looked set to claim their first Premier League victory of the season before Cunha’s late intervention.
United had opportunities to score earlier in the match. Bruno Fernandes struck the post, while Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno made important saves to deny Marcus Rashford and Bryan Mbeumo.
Cunha eventually levelled in the 89th minute when his effort from outside the box took a deflection off Patrick Dorgu, wrong-footing Leno and sending the ball into the net. The point left United 12th with five points from five league matches.
The result also extended United’s unbeaten run at Fulham to 11 matches, although Michael Carrick’s side have now won only one of their opening five league fixtures.
Earlier, Manchester City maintained their perfect league start with a 5-3 victory over Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium.
Antoine Semenyo scored twice for City, while Rayan Cherki and Enzo Fernandez also found the net before Erling Haaland sealed the victory late in the game. Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey scored a hat-trick but could not prevent his side from leaving Manchester without a point.
Haaland’s goal also meant he had scored against all 25 Premier League clubs he has faced. The victory kept City three points clear at the top of the table with a 100 percent record after five matches.
City manager Enzo Maresca acknowledged that his side had defensive problems despite the victory.
“To be honest, I prefer to win 1-nil than 5-3,” Maresca said. He added that two of Sunderland’s three goals had been conceded too easily.
Liverpool also secured a 1-0 victory away to Bournemouth, with Alexander Isak scoring the decisive goal in the 57th minute, while Leeds United and Crystal Palace played out a goalless draw.
