Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), nearly four months after resigning from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Gatekeepers News reports that Lawal announced his defection in Abuja on Tuesday after meeting with the leadership of the NDC, led by its national leader, Seriake Dickson.
The former SGF also declared his support for the party’s presidential ticket of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Lawal said Nigerians concerned about insecurity, economic hardship, hunger, ignorance and disease would have reason to support the NDC ticket.
“I have nothing much to say, except to say that anybody, anybody at all in Nigeria that has the interest of our country at large, has the sympathy for the suffering that is going on in our country, which include insecurity, economic deprivation, hunger, ignorance and disease, will have no choice but to join a party that presents Peter Obi and Kwankwaso as its presidential candidate and running mate,” he said.
Dickson, while presenting Lawal with his membership card, described him as an experienced organiser and mobiliser.
He said Lawal would play a leadership role in the party’s activities and campaigns in the North-East, including providing guidance to candidates and helping resolve issues within the zone.
Lawal resigned from the ADC on June 1 after raising concerns over the conduct of the party’s presidential primary, which produced former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar as its candidate. He had alleged that the primary process was manipulated, a claim that was part of his stated reasons for leaving the party.
