Nine people have been killed in a road crash involving a commercial bus and a Sino truck in the Bethel area of Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.
Gatekeepers News reports that the accident occurred at about 4:55pm along the JBD-Ore route within the Ijebu-Ode Unit Command, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).
The Chief Route Commander and Sector Public Education Officer of the FRSC Ogun State Command, Afolabi Odunsi, disclosed this in a statement.
Odunsi said the victims comprised three men and six women, adding that all nine people involved in the crash died.
“The victims comprised three men and six women. All nine people involved in the crash died,” he said.
The vehicles involved were a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus, with registration number 14B-299DT, operated by Delta Line, and a white Sino truck, with registration number AAB162XD, operated by Bill Gas Solution Ltd.
The FRSC said the crash occurred during rainfall, leaving the road wet.
A preliminary investigation identified speed violation as the probable cause of the accident.
Odunsi said the FRSC rescue team arrived at the scene about three minutes after receiving the report, at approximately 4:58pm.
The bodies of the victims were evacuated and deposited at the General Hospital morgue in Ijebu-Ode, while the two vehicles were towed to Ilese Police Station by the Ilese Police Motor Traffic Division.
The Ogun State Sector Commander, Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists, particularly commercial vehicle operators, to exercise greater caution when driving during rainfall.
Ogunjobi advised motorists to obey speed limits, maintain safe following distances and avoid actions that could endanger other road users.
He warned that speeding on wet roads increases the risk of crashes because reduced tyre grip and visibility can make it more difficult for drivers to control their vehicles or stop safely.
The FRSC condoled with the families of the victims and urged motorists and other road users to prioritise safety at all times.
