Israel And Palestine Agree To Ceasefire

GAZA CITY, GAZA - MAY 20: Palestinians inspect damage to buildings in Al-Saftawi street northern Gaza City on May 20, 2021 in Gaza City, Gaza. Civilian casualties continue to rise as Israel-Gaza violence entered a tenth day. More than 220 people in Gaza and twelve people in Israel have been killed as cross-border rocket exchanges continue. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to continue the bombing campaign despite increasing calls from the United Nations and the international community to end the conflict. The conflict which erupted May 10, comes after weeks of rising Israeli-Palestinian tension in East Jerusalem, which peaked with violent clashes inside the holy site of Al-Aqsa Mosque. Israel and Palestine have agreed to ceasefire.

Gatekeepers News reports that Israel and Palestine have agreed to a ceasefire after more than a week of conflict which has left hundreds of people dead.

Israel’s Security Cabinet and a senior Hamas leader confirmed that a mutual ceasefire deal has been agreed upon.

The Senior Hamas leader revealed that the ceasefire will commence by 2 am local time on Friday.

However, an official announcement from the Israeli Prime Minister’s Officer stated that the ceasefire would go into effect at an hour which is yet to be finalised.

According to the statement, Israel Security Cabinet had agreed to a truce put forward by Egypt for a “mutual unconditional ceasefire” over Gaza.

The statement read, “the Security Cabinet convened this evening and accepted unanimously the recommendation of all security elements — the Chief of Staff, the head of the Shin Bet, the Head of the Mossad, and the head of the National Security Council — to accept the Egyptian initiative for a mutual unconditional ceasefire that will go into effect at an hour to be agreed upon later.”

The official statement, however, made it clear that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will be instructed to re-start its campaign against militant groups in Gaza if militant groups fail to keep their side of the agreement.

The statement read further, “The political leadership emphasizes that the reality on the ground will determine any decision to resume the military campaign.”

IDF has carried out a devastating aerial bombardment of Gaza over the past 11 days, targeting Hamas’ vast tunnel network, Gaza Tower, and other infrastructure.

Hamas-run health ministry also revealed that Israeli strikes have also killed at least 230 people in Gaza, including 65 children.

On Wednesday, UNICEF revealed that 72,000 Gazans have been displaced.

According to the IDF, Palestinian militants on the other end have fired more than 4,000 rockets into Israel.
