Why We Can't Obey Twitter Ban - Church Leaders
Nigerian church leaders have explained why they cannot obey the Nigerian Government’s Twitter ban.

Gatekeepers News reports that Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG); and William Kumuyi, the founder and General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, on Monday declared that they will continue to use the microblogging platform despite the suspension announced on Friday.

In a separate reaction via Twitter, the Church leaders noted that their audience is all over the country and are not limited to Nigeria, hence, they cannot obey the suspension.

“The Redeemed Christian Church of God is domiciled in more than 170 nations and territories. The tweets here are in accordance with Article 19 of the United Nations universal declaration of human rights,” Adeboye stated on Twitter.

Article 19 of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights read, “Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.”

Also, Kumuyi said, “In view of the Twitter ban in Nigeria, please note that the content shared on this handle is targeted at a global audience in more than five continents and over 100 nations and we share the content from any of these locations.”

Gatekeepers News reports that the Nigerian Government suspended Twitter, citing the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence. The suspension comes after President Muhammadu Buhari’s Tweet on ‘civil war’ was deleted by the social media giant.

UK, US as well as the European Union have also joined Nigerians in condemning the Government’s decision which could significantly thwart economic productivity as citizens and even the government are dependent on digital media.

The Twitter suspension could backfire for Government and block new investments into the country’s technology sector.
