Spain and Switzerland have fought their ways out of the Euro 2020 round of 16.
Gatekeepers News reports that drama played out as Spain and Switzerland qualify for the quarterfinals of the ongoing Euro 2020.
The game started at an unfriendly note for the Spanish men when Pedri netted an own goal at the 20th minute.
Pablo Sabia launched a relief for his country at the 38th minute with Cesar Azpilicueta’s goal coming in at the 57th minute. Fernando Torres gave Spain a stunning third of 77th minute.
However, Croatia gave Luis Enrique’s men a tough time as they equalised from two goals down with a space of 7 minutes bringing the game to 3-3 at full time.
The Spanish men were forced to double up their efforts as Alvaro Morata pushed in the 4th goal for his country at the 100th minute and Mikel Oyarzabal sealed the fifth three minutes after Morata.
It was another dramatic night when France and Switzerland’s scoreline was 3-3 at full time.
Unlike Spain who were rescued at extra-time by Morata and Oyarzabal, none of the Didier Deschamps and Vladimir Petkovic men were able to perform the wonder until the whistle was blown for a penalty kick-out.
PSG Kylian Mbappe shattered the hope of the defending Champions when he missed the deciding penalty kick bring the shootout at 5-4 in favour of Switzerland.
Mbappe Apologies For Missing Penalty
Mbappe has taken to his Instagram page to apologise to his country for missing the penalty shootout against Switzerland which has cost them a spot at the quarterfinals of the European Championship.
He wrote after the game, “I’m sorry about this penalty. I wanted to help the team but I failed.
“It’s going to be hard to sleep after this, but unfortunately these are the ups and downs of this sport that I love so much.
“The most important (thing) will be to get back up again even stronger for future commitments. Congratulations and good luck to the Swiss team.”
Meanwhile, France coach Didier Deschamps refused to criticise Mbappe for his costly miss.
Deschamps said, “Nobody can be annoyed with him. When you take the responsibility, it can happen. He is obviously very affected by it.”
Switzerland will meet Spain in St Petersburg in the quarter-finals, on Friday.
