Gatekeepers News reports that 17-year-old American, Coco Gauff who was set to represent the USA at the upcoming Olympics has announced her withdrawal from the Games in Japan after testing positive for COVID-19.
Gauff announced her withdrawal through social media on Sunday, “I’m disappointed to share the news that I have tested positive for COVID and won’t be able to play in the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
“It has always been a dream of mine to represent the USA at the Olympics, and I hope there will be many more chances for me to make this come true in the future.”
Her withdrawal further weakens America’s line-up in the women’s tournament, with Serena Williams, Sofia Kenin, and Madison Keys all having already opted out of playing. The U.S will now be represented by Jennifer Brady, Jessica Pegula, and Alison Riske in the singles.
The Tokyo Games, which was pushed by a year due to the Coronavirus pandemic, will commence on Friday.
