Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Benin Republic, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.) has met with the Beninese President, Patrice Talon.
Gatekeepers News reports that Buratai met with Talon on Tuesday during the official presentation of his letter of credence.
Buratai’s meeting with Talon comes amid the planned extradition of the wanted Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho.
Sunday Igboho was arrested in Cotonou on July 19, 2021 when he tried to board a flight to Germany.
Pelumi Olajengbes who is a member of Igboho’s legal team had said Buratai asked for the extradition of Igboho to the headquarters of the Department of State Services in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, but his request was turned down.
Gatekeepers News reports that Buratai served as Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff between July 2015 and January 2021. He was deployed as Nigeria’s envoy to the Benin Republic in June 2021.
President Muhammadu Buhari had in February appointed nominated him, a decision greeted with mixed reactions. Buratai’s appointment was approved by the Senate on February 23, 2021, despite opposition by some Nigerians.
