IPOB Sit-At-Home: Activities Shut Down In Abakaliki

Residents of Abakaliki, capital of Ebonyi State, Southeast Nigeria have dutifully obeyed IPOB sit-at-home protest by shutting down activities in the area.

Gatekeepers News reports that Abakaliki, capital of Ebonyi State, has been shut down on Monday as residents obey the sit-at-home protest by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The Separatist group earlier announced that the weekly protest will hold on Mondays until the Federal Government releases its leader, Nnamdi Kanu from detention.

The group had called for the exercise to protest the arrest and detention of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu by the Federal Government.

At the time of filing this report, Schools, Shops, banks and other businesses in the city remained under lock.

However, reports showed that some cars, commercial tricycles, and motorcycles were operating on major streets and roads in the city.

Although banks remained shut, their Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) were functional and dispensing cash to customers.

A few banks, however, had their gates opened but did not have customers to attend to.

Bank staff told The Nation they were instructed to report for work but not to open for business till they were told to do so.

Some security operatives were seen in their vans on patrol of major streets while residents were seen in clusters discussing the situation.

Students writing the National Examination Council (NECO) exams, however, defied the protest as they were cited going to school in the morning.

Meanwhile, workers of some businesses, who reported to work, were left stranded as they found their offices under lock and key.
