Aggrieved students of Government Secondary School, Tse-Agberagba, Konshisha Local Government Area of Benue State, set their school ablaze on Sunday.
Gatekeepers News gathered that the students who were candidates of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), were angry because the school management failed to register them for the WAEC examination.
One of the school staff, who spoke with The Nation on the condition of anonymity, explained that the SSS 3 students registered for the WASSCE and their names were successfully sent to the WAEC website.
The school official explained that when the Headteacher, Aliba Stephen Sende, got to the WAEC office, he was however informed that his school did not have enough computers to cover the number of registered students, hence, their registration was cancelled.
The school was also asked to pay a fine of N1 million before the centre would be reopened.
The Headteacher pleaded with the examination body to reopen their data so that the registration would be edited, according to the source, but did not get any response on time.
The school official said the registration was later edited and submitted two weeks before WASSCE commenced, but it was too late as they were informed that the registration has closed.
The Headteacher reportedly went to the WAEC office again after he learnt about the closure of registration but was given some conditions that must be fulfilled for an external examination centre to be established for the affected students.
The conditions, according to the source, were that GSS Tse-Agberagba must have 150 candidates and the school must have a perimeter fence.
Knowing it could not fulfil the conditions, the management and the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) resolved that the examination should be suspended until next year for the students to come back and write their WASSCE.
The WASSCE candidates who were aggrieved by the development allegedly decided to set the school ablaze on Sunday.
