UCL Draw: PSG To Play Man City In Group Stage

Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City will face each other in the group stage of the 2021/2022 Champions League season.

Gatekeepers News reports that the UEFA Champions League (UCL) Thursday’s draw has revealed that two of the leading candidates to win the Champions League, PSG and City will meet each other on the group stage.

Last season, City defeated PSG in the semi-finals of the competition but lost to Chelsea at the final in Porto.

The Ligue 1 club responded to this defeat by signing Lionel Messi in June. The draw has, therefore, increased the chances of a clash between the Argentine and his great rival Cristiano Ronaldo as City have been making moves to sign the Portuguese.

Although, before the UCL draw, a meeting between Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mends and Juventus ended without an agreement being reached, football lovers have kept their fingers crossed on the next move.

City and PSG are in Group A along with RB Leipzig and Belgian champions Club Brugge.

Meanwhile, Leipzig and PSG were in the same group last season, with the two sides qualifying for the last 16 ahead of Manchester United.

Titleholders Chelsea who claimed the majority of the UCL awards will play Juventus in Group H. Both clubs will be expected to advance from a section that includes Russian champions Zenit Saint Petersburg and Swedish champions Malmo who knocked out Rangers in the third qualifying round.

Another fascinating draw was Group E, which includes Spanish Barcelona, German Bayern Munich, Portuguese Benfica, and Ukrainian Dynamo Kiev.

Barca will not have it easy at the group stage as their last meeting with Bayern ended 8-2 in favour of the German club.

In Group B, Liverpool will face Spanish champions Atletico Madrid, which insinuates a return to the Wanda Metropolitano stadium where Jurgen Klopp’s side defeated Tottenham Hostpur in 2019 final to win the European Cup for the sixth time.

Others in the group include AC Milan and FC Porto. Milan are back in the Champions League for the first time since 2013/14.

Meanwhile, Manchester United will be facing Villarreal who defeated them in a penalty shootout in last season’s Europa League final. The two clubs in Group F were also drawn Atalanta and Swiss champions Young Boys.

The first round of group fixtures will be played on September 14 and 15.
