Eleven people have been confirmed dead while several others are missing after a passenger boat crashed into a freight barge in the Amazon in Peru.
Gatekeepers News reports that the collision that happened on the Huallaga River, in Muyuna on Sunday caused the wooden passenger boat, the Ayachi, to capsize.
National Institute of Civil Defense in a statement said: “So far there is an undetermined number of missing persons, as well as 11 dead and six injured.”
Firefighters, policemen and sailors have commenced a search for those who are still missing.
The victims of the capsized boat include 20 children, according to survivors.
Gatekeepers News gathered that the passengers belonged to a religious community that was returning to the city of Yurimaguas after participating in a vigil in a secluded hamlet in the jungle known as Santa Maria.
