Oyo State High Court has ordered the Department of State Security (DSS) to pay the sum of N20 billion to Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo who is popularly known as Sunday Igboho for what was described as ‘unlawfully’ raiding and destruction of his house.
Gatekeepers News reports that the DSS had on July 1 invaded Igboho’s house in Soka, Ibadan at about 1:30 am and arrested 12 of his aides, while Igboho managed to escape arrest.
Igboho, thereafter, headed to the Ibadan Division of the Oyo State High Court on July 22 to file an application, through his lawyer, Yomi Aliyu. The application sought to enforce his fundamental human rights, pursuant to Sections 33-46 of the 1999 Constitution as amended and relevant articles of the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights.
The plaintiff asked the court to order the respondents to jointly pay him the sum of ₦500 million as special damages (for his house and his car) and another ₦500 billion as exemplary and aggravated damages for beaching his fundamental rights with the invasion.
He also sought an order for the Federal Government, State Security Service, and the Director SSS, Oyo State to tender a public apology in two national dailies.
Igboho also wants the court to direct the respondents to return all the items seized from the house.
The items, according to him, include, N2m cash, one thousand Euros, travel documents including international passports belonging to him and his family members, gold jewellery and wristwatches, 2 mobile phones.
Ruling on the matter on Friday, Justice Ladiran Akintola awarded the sum of N20 billion as exemplary and aggravated damages against the secret police.
