Three persons have been confirmed died after an Amtrak train derailed in the U.S State of Montana.

Gatekeepers News reports that Starr Tyler, a dispatcher at the Liberty Country Sherriff’s Office, confirmed that at least three people were killed in Saturday’s incident.

Amtrak said the deaths were “deeply saddened”, adding that many people also sustained injuries.

According to reports, the Empire Builder train had about 147 passengers and 13 crew on board when five cars derailed near the town of Joplin at 4pm (22:00 GMT).

“Amtrak is working with the local authorities to transport injured passengers, and safely evacuate all other passengers,” it added.

Gatekeepers News reports the cause of Saturday’s incident could not be ascertained immediately but the National Transportation Safety Board said it will send a 14-member team, including investigators and specialists in railway signals and other disciplines, to investigate the derailment.
