Super Eagles have beaten Liberia to maintain the top spot in their 2022 World Cup qualifying group.
Gatekeepers News reports that the Super Eagles have maintained the top spot in their 2022 World Cup qualifying group with 12 points after defeating Liberia 2-0 on Saturday.
Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi returned to the squad to make Gernot Rohr’s two changes from the win over the Central African Republic.
Penalties scored by Victor Osimhen and skipper Ahmed Musa helped Nigeria win in Tangier.
Osimhen broke the deadlock in the 15th minute after he converted from the spot to calmly give Nigeria the lead.
Shortly before the half-hour mark, a good through ball from Iheanacho was maximised into the Eagles’ net by Liberia’s Jamilu Collins, but it was ruled out for offside.
Iheanacho tried redeeming this flaw by orchestrating a brilliant move at the 32nd minute. Although he found Osimhen with a ball over the top, the Napoli striker fired off target with only the goalkeeper to beat.
All efforts from Peter Butler’s men to close the Super Eagles down as the first half were fruitless as Maduka Okoye enjoyed a quiet first half.
Rohr’s tactical change which brought Ahmed Musa to replace Iheanacho yielded the second goal for the Eagles.
As Osimhen won Nigeria another spot-kick two minutes into injury time, Musa made himself available to pick up the ball which he struck beyond the keeper for the assurance goal.
