Pep Guardiola has cancelled his Manchester City press conference after recording an ‘inconclusive’ COVID-19 test.
Gatekeepers News reports that Guardiola is undergoing a second COVID-19 test, stopping him from facing the media today ahead of Sunday’s trip to Newcastle United.
The 50-year-old travelled to Barcelona with sporting Director Txiki Begiristain and coach Lorenzo Buenaventura to witness Sergio Aguero’s retirement announcement.
Guardiola will not make it to St James’ Park at the weekend if a second test comes back positive as he will be self-isolating ahead of the Christmas period.
Meanwhile, Assistant manager Juanma Lillo will step forward to speak about the Newcastle match to the club’s in-house media channels should the City boss return a positive result.
Following a raft of postponements amid the latest rise in Coronavirus infection rates nationally, Sunday’s game is one of only five in the top flight still due to go ahead this weekend.
In 2020, the Spanish professional football manager lost his mother to the virus.
Earlier this week, Guardiola said, “I’m concerned – not because we are going to cancel or break the league but because in society the virus is here and people suffer.
“Some people, staff here, have got it right now and we’ve spoken with the players almost every day and told them to be careful – stay safe, stay healthy, (wear) masks, social distance.”
