EU Approves €820m Digital Economy Package For Nigeria

European Union (EU) has approved €820m Digital Economy Package for Nigeria.

Gatekeepers News reports that the Executive Vice-President of the EU Commission, Margrethe Vestager, says the EU has approved a three-year Digital Economy Package worth €820 million for Nigeria.

Vestager disclosed this while leading a delegation of the EU Commission on a visit to Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo at the State House.

According to her, the package which will last till 2024, was part of a Global Gateway Africa-Europe Investment Package worth €150 billion announced recently by the President of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

She added that the package will help enhance secure connectivity, digitalise public services, support entrepreneurship and build digital skills, while developing a human-centric democratic governance framework for technology.

Vice President Osinbajo in his response welcomed the EU Digital Economy support, describing it as impressive, adding that the use of digital technology is crucial in Nigeria’s recently released National Development Plan.

Osinbajo noted that it is a relief that the European Union (EU) supported the view canvassed by Nigeria that gas be considered a transition fuel as the global community moves towards net-zero emission targets.

The Vice President said: “We are relieved to hear of the EU’s support on gas as a transition fuel. It’s some bit of relief. Nigeria has been in the forefront of the international advocacy on the issue.”
