The first time I encountered this young man, nothing about his hyperactive approach to life bellied the numerous challenges he’s had to contend with.
Born a perfectly normal and cute child, Victor Uchendu, at the tender age of three, had a freak accident which affected his spinal cord and rendered him paralyzed from the waist down.
Born to parents of extremely modest means, his condition and that of the family would further take a hit with the sudden death of his father and ever since, life has really not been kind to his visually impaired and frail mum and the family in general.
But Victor is a perfect example of someone who never allowed challenges weigh him down nor drown his vision which explains why he’s not only the life of every gathering he finds himself, but has been a major source of encouragement to his immediate family and friends.
I first encountered him at a programme organized by SSOLIN, one of our support groups dedicated to directly reaching out and positively impacting the lives of constituents in their various streets, wards and LGA’S.
This young man you see here was involved in almost every activity from Poetry, MC’ing, Drama and almost joined in the dance session if his limbs would permit!
And he could sing up a storm!
There was something about his energetic nature that just drew me to him and there and then, I knew I had to do something for him.
To cut the long story short, he would later relay his long-standing dream of attending a music school and had even done extensive research on the particular school he wanted to attend.
Well, earlier today, I had arranged for a vehicle to take him to his school of choice where I’d earlier paid his full tuition and made available everything necessary for a seamless stay and can’t begin to tell you how excited I was when his call came through this afternoon to excitedly announce his arrival!
Dear Victor, you are a star already and I have no doubts that this passion of yours shall not only take you places but constantly announce you in the presence of kings.
I understand that your mum Mrs Charity Uchendu and siblings were inconsolable earlier today, at the thought of missing your long absence but I’d have them know that this is for the best and the beginning of the best days of not only your life but theirs.
I shall be looking forward to reports of your progress and retain no doubt that you shall conquer at the Tenstrings Music School. Ajah Campus, Lagos.
