President Muhammadu Buhari, on Thursday, commissioned 500 housing units constructed by the Federal Government to provide accommodation for Internal Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Borno State.
Gatekeepers News reports that the President also commissioned Teachers’ Quarters built and furnished by the state government to provide accommodation for its Teachers in Maiduguri, the state capital.
The President was in the state to mark the 2022 World Humanitarian Day (WHD).
President Buhari stated that his administration places a premium on humanitarian issues, hence, the creation of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development in Nigeria on August 21, 2019.
He said, “As we observe World Humanitarian Day, I urge world leaders to pay tribute to all the works of life and nationalists that are advocating for life-saving aids,” adding that the most vulnerable citizens are affected by man-made and natural disasters.”
Buhari added that the humanitarian day also reaffirms the commitment to reduce the effects of disasters, climate change and other misfortunes through the provisions of livelihood support for the victims to live in dignity and comfort.
“One of the most innovative steps taken by our administration; was the coordination of humanitarian assistance efforts with the entrenchment of coordination of emergency humanitarian in line with international best practices.”
He noted that this was to ensure strategic disaster mitigation, preparedness and responses, and the implementation of social inclusiveness and protection.
President Buhari also directed the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development and its agencies to come up with specific programmes to address urgent threats posed by explosive remnants in the North East region.
”I urge the Ministry and its agencies as well as State Governments and the Special Committee I have set up under the Chairmanship of the Vice President to come up with specific programmes and projects that respond to these emerging challenges of explosive ordnance as well as that of children orphaned by insurgency,” the President said in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina.
