Lagos State House of Assembly (LAHA) has adopted a resolution, calling upon Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to convene a security council meeting within the state.

Gatekeepers News reports that according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the assembly passed the resolution at a plenary under a motion of ‘Matter of Urgent Public Importance’ by Mr Kehinde Joseph (APC-Alimosho II).

The legislative body convened the meeting to address the rising occurrences of alleged resident killings by individuals dressed in uniform.

Senator Olamilekan Adeola recounted the unfortunate death of his aide, Mr. Adeniyi Sanni, reportedly killed by unidentified military personnel in July. His lifeless body was subsequently found near Ladipo Bus Stop along the Oshodi-Mile 2 Expressway.

The assembly also responded to a recent altercation between army personnel and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officers.

Speaker Mr. Mudashiru Obasa expressed his concern over the consistent pattern of killings involving individuals in uniform. He emphasized that safeguarding lives and property is a core responsibility of the government, asserting that multiple killings in the state raised alarm.

He said: “I quite agree with the prime mover of the motion to call on Mr Governor to quickly hold a meeting with all heads of security agencies in Lagos State to nip this in the bud.

“At least three people have been declared dead, said to be killed by men in either Police or Army uniforms and we cannot conclude if they are security men or otherwise.”

Earlier, Joseph, the initiator of the motion, highlighted the recent incidents of killings, underscoring the gravity of the situation.

Joseph recalled that in August, Mr. Adeniyi Sanni, an aide to Senator Olamilekan Adeola, was killed. He cited two more incidents on August 17 and 19.

“The funny thing is that the killings took the same pattern. Adeniyi Sanni’s wife told me that her husband was stopped at a checkpoint by men in military uniforms.

“They requested documents which the wife sent through WhatsApp to him. His corpse was later found somewhere.

“Same was the case of Mr Lawal who was stopped and asked for his documents. They later dropped his corpse in Iyana-Ipaja area,” he said.

Joseph moved that the police enhance security measures in the state, while the military should identify and apprehend the perpetrators behind these crimes wearing army uniforms.

During the discussion, Mr. Bonu Saanu (APC-Badagry 1) pointed out the growing difficulty in distinguishing between genuine security personnel and impostors.

Subsequently, the speaker instructed the house clerk, Mr. Lekan Onafeko, to relay the house’s resolution on the matter to the governor.
