Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declined to attend a last-minute reconciliatory meeting organised by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong, in an effort to prevent the two-day warning strike already declared by the Labour union.
Gatekeepers News reports that only the leadership of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), led by its President, Festus Osifo, showed up for the meeting slated for 3 p.m. but which started at exactly 5:32 p.m.
On Friday, the NLC in a communique jointly signed by its national president, Joe Ajaero and Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, the NLC had previously announced the two-day warning strike due to what it described as the Federal Government’s failure to engage with organised labour and address the impact of fuel subsidy removal on the “poor masses”.
Recall that Union in August staged a one-day protest, which grounded activities in major cities across the country.
The NLC cited other grievances, including alleged police laying siege at the National Union of Road Transport Workers’ headquarters, alleged exploitation of the workers’ rights in Imo state, interference in trade union matters by the Abia State government, and proposed demolition by the new Federal Capital Territory minister, Nyesom Wike, among others.
