The Imo State Police Command has stated that contrary to earlier reports, the force did not arrest the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero in Owerri on Wednesday.
Gatekeepers News reports that the command’s PRO, ASP Okoye Henry in press release clarified the situation involving the reported arrest of Ajaero.
The NPF stated that Comrade Joe Ajaero was in Owerri as part of the NLC’s preparations for a protest rally in the state, aimed at mobilising workers. During their planning, suggestions were made to lock down some essential facilities, including the airport, which led to resistance by some workers and individuals, resulting in scuffles and heated arguments.
In the midst of the altercation, a mob attacked the NLC President. To ensure his safety and prevent possible harm, the Imo Police Command exercised its operational discretion by taking him into protective custody at the State Command Headquarters.
After being taken into custody, the Commissioner of Police directed that Comrade Joe Ajaero be provided with medical attention due to the injuries sustained during the attack.
The Force however, reiterated that there is a court injunction from the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Owerri, dated 27th October 2023 (Suit No. NICN/OW/41/2023), which bars the NLC from conducting the intended protest rally in Owerri.
The Commissioner of Police, Imo State Police Command, CP Mohammed Ahmed Barde, psc (+), emphasised the need for all parties to adhere to the court’s directives to maintain the current security arrangements in Owerri and other parts of Imo State, particularly in preparation for the upcoming election on 11th November 2023.
