After over a month in police detention, Naira Marley, the popular singer, and Sam Larry, a showbiz personality, have been granted bail in connection with the death of Mohbad, a fast-rising singer who passed away on September 12.
Gatekeepers News reports that Sam Larry was arrested on September 29, while Naira Marley was detained for questioning on October 3.
Subsequently, the Lagos police arraigned them before a magistrate’s court in Yaba on October 4 and requested their remand for 30 days pending the completion of the investigation.
However, in a recent ruling, the chief magistrate, Adeola Olatunbosun, ordered the suspects to be remanded for only 21 days. This remand order expired on October 26.
Last week, Naira Marley and Sam Larry filed a fundamental rights suit challenging their “continued detention” in police custody. The police and Olatunbosun were named as defendants in the lawsuit, with both Naira Marley and Sam Larry demanding N20 million in damages.
On Wednesday, the magistrate’s court granted bail to Naira Marley and Sam Larry in the sum of N20 million with three responsible sureties.
The defendants have been instructed to submit their passports and make weekly appearances at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Panti. Additionally, they were cautioned not to contact the magistrate directly regarding the case.
