Falconets Beat Tanzania To Secure Final Round Of World Cup Qualifiers

Nigeria’s Falconets have progressed to the final round of the Colombia 2022 U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers, triumphing 3-2 on aggregate against Tanzania.

Gatekeepers News reports that following a 1-1 draw in the first leg, the Falconets claimed victory in the second leg with a 2-1 score at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja.

Janet Aikekoromowei opened the scoring for the Falconets in the 15th minute, assisted by Opeyemi Ajakaye. Tanzania responded five minutes later when Jamila Mnunduka leveled the score in a goalmouth scramble. The decisive goal arrived in the 60th minute, with Comfort Folorunsho heading in Shobowale Olushola’s assist.

The Falconets’ impressive performance sets up a final round clash against Burundi, scheduled for January 2024. The top four teams from Africa will secure a spot in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, hosted by Colombia from August 31 to September 22.

Although the Falconets were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the 2022 edition by The Netherlands, their current qualification bid signals determination to make a mark in the upcoming tournament.
