Lagos To Compensate Landlords And Tenants Displaced By Railway

Lagos State Government has vowed to compensate both landlords and tenants displaced by the construction of the second phase of the Blue Rail Line around the Okokomaiko area of the state.

Gatekeepers News reports that the Managing Director of Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, LAMATA, Abimbola Akinajo on Thursday, pledged during the press briefing to commemorate the 20th anniversary of LAMATA.

Akinajo said with Lagos State’s history and track record of following due process in such matters, the displaced residents would be compensated.

She said, “When it comes to the displacement of people, I think we have demonstrated that we follow due process, and we pay due compensation.

“So, for us, we follow international best practices, and we ensure that everybody that is displaced is compensated.

“We are the first organisation that compensated tenants. What we’ve found out is that the tenants will not be compensated, and the landlord will take the money and go. But because we have identified that that is a problem, we compensate tenants as well, so that nobody in the state is left behind.”

The MD LAMATA said, “All we’re trying to say is that we will do our best to see that all who have to be displaced will be duly compensated.”
