Governors who have presided over the affairs of Ondo State since 1999 are dead except one.
Gatekeepers News reports that Olusegun Mimiko is the only surviving ex-Governor of the Sunshine State and coincidentally, the first Governor in the State to win a second-term bid and completed his tenure.
Below are the Governors who served in Ondo State since the return of democracy in 1999;
1. Adebayo Adefarati – He was one of the first governors elected after the military era ended and was inaugurated on May 29, 1999. He ended his tenure in 2003. Adefarati died from an undisclosed ailment on 29 March 2007. He was aged 76.
2. Olusegun Agagu – He was the second Governor of Ondo State to be democratically elected from 29 May 2003 until February 2009 when the courts voided his re-election as governor on account of electoral irregularities. He was also Deputy Governor of Ondo State between 1992–1993. He slumped and died in Lagos on 13 September 2013. He was 65.
3. Rotimi Akeredolu – He served as Governor of Ondo State from 24 February 2017 until he died of protracted prostate cancer on 27 December 2023. He was aged 67.
The only surviving Governor out of the Governors elected since the return of democracy in 1999 is Olusegun Mimiko who served as Ondo State Governor from 2009 to 2017.
