Nigeria has experienced another collapse of its electricity grid, leading to a nationwide power outage.
Gatekeepers News reports that the collapse occurred at approximately 11:51 AM on Sunday, causing the system’s capacity to drop from 2,407 megawatts to just 31MW by noon and eventually reaching zero by 1 PM.
Despite efforts to privatize the power sector over a decade ago, the grid remains unreliable, with frequent disruptions affecting consumers.
Distribution companies are notifying customers about the situation, and the generation companies express concerns about the impact on equipment safety and durability.
The outage left several states, including Kaduna, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kebbi, without electricity.
According to the system operator’s platform, all 20 power plants, except Ibom Power with 31 megawatts, were offline by 11:51 AM.
