FG Inaugurates Steering Committee For Nigeria ID4D World Bank Project

The Federal Government has inaugurated the Steering Committee for the Nigeria Digital Identification for Development (ID4D) World Bank Project.

Gatekeepers News reports that the committee is chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume.

 

According to a press release signed by Segun Imohiosen, the Director, Information of the OSGF, the committee aims to enroll every Nigerian on the digital identification system to enhance service delivery and boost the digital economy.

The Steering Committee which has the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume as Chairman and the Director-General of National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Abisoye Coker-Odusote as Secretary, has also the Honourable Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, Honourable Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, the Honourable Minister of Budget and National Planning, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, the Honourable Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, the Honourable Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo and the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun as members.

 

In his inaugural speech, Sen. Akume who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Dr. Nnamdi Maurice Mbaeri, emphasised the government’s commitment to implementing the Strategic Roadmap for the project, which includes the establishment of a three-tiered institutional framework within the National Identity Management Commission. This framework will oversee governance, coordination, and project implementation.

Sen. Akume also underscored the high premium the Tinubu-led administration place on the digital identity with the recent reinforcement of the extant approval for the mandatory use of National Identification Number (NIN) for digital services and the issuance of service-wide circular from OSGF to this effect.

 

The Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, highlighted the importance of collaboration, innovation, and progress in harnessing digital technology for socio-economic development. She expressed confidence in the committee’s expertise and dedication to ensuring the successful implementation of the project.

The project aligns with the recent directive for the mandatory use of the National Identification Number (NIN) for digital services, emphasizing the government’s focus on digital identity and inclusion.
