The head of Israeli military intelligence, Major General Aharon Haliva, has resigned after taking responsibility for the failures that led to the deadliest attack in Israel’s history.
Gatekeepers News reports that in a resignation letter released by the military, he said: “The intelligence division under my command did not live up to the task we were entrusted with. I have carried that black day with me ever since.”
The attack, led by Hamas on Oct. 7, killed around 1,200 people and tarnished the reputation of the Israeli military.
Lieutenant-General Herzi Halevi and Ronen Bar, the head of the domestic intelligence agency, also accepted responsibility for the attack but have not resigned.
The war in Gaza continues with Israel launching an offensive that has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians.
