By Gbenga Akingbule

The outgoing Vice Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), Prof Aliyu Shugaba, has described the ongoing installation of a 12 megawatts solar power project as a game changer.

Gatekeepers News reports that the project, funded by the World Bank, is expected to be completed by the end of July and will provide 7 megawatts for UNIMAID and 5 megawatts for the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH).

According to Prof Shugaba, the solar power project will not only provide enough power for the university but also excess energy that can be sold to neighbouring communities and the Borno State government, with the revenue generated being used for future development.

The project, designed by the Energising Education Programme (EEP) through the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), aims to enhance security, ease of learning and research work for both students and lecturers, as well as revolutionize the healthcare delivery system at UMTH, where epileptic power supply has been a major challenge.

The lead Resident Engineer, Lincoln Uyigue, revealed that the project is at 78.5% completion and will include over 25,000 solar panels, 7MWh batteries, and a 10MW diesel generator to provide backup power.

According to the consultant Lead Resident  Engineer, the  12 MW solar hybrid power plant project  also include “installing 288 streetlight units on the University campus, establishing a world-class workshop and training center (WTC Building), upgrading the university network, and providing training for twenty female students as part of the EEP STEM internship program.”

Prof Shugaba also addressed the recent killing of a lecturer on campus, stating that additional security measures have been employed to ensure such an incident never happens again. The police and other security agencies are investigating the incident with a view to intercepting the perpetrators.

The outgoing VC also highlighted other achievements recorded during his tenure, including the construction of new structures, equipment, and facilities, as well as the rehabilitation of many others.

“These projects were made possible through appropriation, TETFUND, and IGR projects, as well as donations from individuals, governmental and non-governmental organizations.”
