Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and other labour unions have announced a nationwide indefinite strike starting midnight on Sunday, June 2, 2024, over the Federal Government’s refusal to increase the proposed minimum wage from N60,000.
Gatekeepers News reports that according to NLC President Joe Ajaero, the strike was called after talks between the government and labour unions broke down on Friday.
The government had proposed a minimum wage of N60,000, which labour unions rejected as insufficient.
Labour unions had previously given the government an ultimatum to meet their demands by May 31, 2024. Despite reducing their initial proposal from N497,000 to N494,000, labour unions remain unsatisfied with the government’s offer.
The strike is expected to affect various sectors, including transportation, healthcare, and education, and may lead to widespread disruptions across the country.
