Court Orders Final Forfeiture Of Private University Built With Stolen Public Funds

Rivers Assembly Crisis: Court Restrains 25 Lawmakers From Legislative Duties
Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the final forfeiture of NOK University and all its assets linked to Anthony Hassan, a former Director of Finance and Accounts at the Federal Ministry of Health.

Gatekeepers News reports that the court had earlier ordered the temporary forfeiture of the institution in a 2022 ruling.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had alleged that Hassan diverted public funds, totaling billions of naira, through the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS) to acquire the assets.

The commission’s investigations revealed that Hassan used the proceeds of unlawful activities to build NOK University.

The court’s judgment, delivered on Friday, forfeited various physical assets of the university, including the senate building, ICT building, faculty of medicine building, and others.

Also, the court ordered the interim forfeiture of Gwasmyen water factory, Gwasmyen event centre, and Gwasmyen international hotel, all linked to Hassan.

The EFCC’s investigative officer, Adaora Asabe Oragudosi, had investigated the case, tracing the properties to Hassan.

The court found the respondent failed to present sufficient evidence to counter the allegations, leading to the final forfeiture order.
